Conference Semifinals Begin Tonight

Three of four Central Hockey League Conference Semifinals series get underway tonight, with Colorado hosting Oklahoma City, Bossier-Shreveport welcoming Memphis and New Mexico entertaining Arizona. The defending champion Laredo Bucks will wait until Monday’s visit by Corpus Christi to continue their defense of their 2005-2006 Ray Miron President’s Cup title. All remaining 2006-2007 CHL playoff games are available live on CHLTV.com.

Game 1, Northern Conference Semifinals
Memphis RiverKings @ Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs

The Mudbugs and RiverKings tangle in their second ever playoff meeting. Exactly five years ago today the RiverKings posted a 4-2 home victory over the Mudbugs to win their CHL Northern Conference Finals series en route to their first of back to back CHL championships. The Mudbugs controlled the regular season series, winning seven of 11 head to head meetings. Memphis only won once (3-2 on November 28th) at the CenturyTel Center this season, with Bossier-Shreveport prevailing the other five times. The RiverKings were better on home ice, posting a mark of 3-1-1 at the DeSoto Civic Center. While Larry Sterling is the clear starter in net for Memphis, Ken Carroll and John DeCaro alternated starts for Bossier-Shreveport in the opening round. Cam Abbott has continued to flash his CHL Rookie of the Year form, leading the Mudbugs with five playoff goals, while Ryan Campbell (five goals) and Phil Aucoin (10 points) have paced Memphis.

Game 1, Northern Conference Semifinals
Oklahoma City Blazers @ Colorado Eagles

We meet again. The Blazers did Bossier-Shreveport a favor by pushing the Eagles to a Game 7 in a highly physical series last year, leaving Colorado drained for their Northern Conference Finals showdown with the Mudbugs. The teams hooked up five times during the regular season, with Colorado dominating late season home meetings on February 16th (8-4) and March 13th (6-1). Expect the Blazers to continue to play physically and crash the net in an attempt to frustrate Marco Emond, who appears to have locked up top netminder duties for Colorado. You’ll likely see both Sean Connors and Sebastien Centomo throughout the series in the Oklahoma City nets, both capable of top performances.

Game 1, Southern Conference Semifinals
Arizona Sundogs @ New Mexico Scorpions

One of two clubs that are very familiar with each other thanks to seven contests in each home arena during the regular season will advance to the Southern Conference Finals. Home ice hasn’t been a huge factor in regular season action, with the Sundogs winning five times at the Santa Ana Star Center, and the Scorpions posting four wins at Tim’s Toyota Center. New Mexico’s David Cacciola, a finalist for the CHL’s Most Outstanding Goaltender award this year, will be tested by CHL MVP Finalist Brent Kelly, who leads the post-season with eight goals and scored a dozen in head to head regular season action. Arizona’s Mike Wall will equally have his hands full with a crop of skilled New Mexico forwards, including Mike Prpich, whose seven playoff goals trail only Kelly.
