Eagles Take Lead, Bucks Win Opener

The Colorado Eagles have taken a 2-1 series lead over Oklahoma City with a 3-1 win and the Laredo Bucks earned a 5-1 home victory over Corpus Christi in their series opener as Central Hockey League Conference Semifinal action resumed Monday.

At the Ford Center, Greg Pankewicz scored his fourth goal of the post-season and added an assist to give Colorado a leg up on the Blazers heading back to the Budweiser Events Center for Games 4 and 5 of the series on Wednesday and Friday. Captain Pankewicz opened the scoring with a power play tally late in the first, matched by Ryan Watson’s third of the season on a Blazers man advantage early in the second. Sean Robertson potted the eventual game winner 5:55 into the third, with Brad Williamson added an insurance marker at the 12:51 mark. Marco Emond turned aside 33 saves for his fourth win of the post-season, while Sebastien Centomo took the loss for Oklahoma City, facing a barrage of 43 shots. The Blazers scored once in 0 power play chances, while the Eagles converted one of four opportunities.

The defending champion Bucks took a 3-0 lead into the third period and were never challenged in the series opener, with Jeff Bes potting his fourth and fifth of the post-season and Leo Thomas adding his fourth on a onetime pass from James Hiebert. Derrick McIver got the Rayz on the board at the 11:18 mark of the third with a power play score, quickly matched by a pair of Bucks goals. The Bucks dominated the shots on goal category 44-23, with Eric Marvin improving his post-season record to 3-0. Ron Vogel made 39 saves but falls to 3-5 in the playoffs. The series resumes Tuesday at the Laredo Entertainment Center, then takes Wednesday off before shifting to the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi for Games 3 and 4 on Thursday and Friday.
