Announced CHL Player Signings for 2007-2008
Stayzer, a former 1999 Calgary Flames draft pick, arrives in New Mexico for the veterans eighth professional season. The Welland , Ont. native broke into the professional ranks in 2000 with the Johnstown Chiefs of the ECHL.
For the last three years, Stayzer played for Central Hockey League rival Corpus Christi. Overall, the forward/defenseman has played in 290 games, scoring 77 points (28G, 49A) and picking up 767 penalty minutes. The Scorpions will lean on Stayzer for his great leadership both on and off the ice.
Blair is a guy we will rely heavily on inside the locker room, said Murphy. He is a solid skater and a good two-way player, but I cant emphasize enough how big of an addition he is as a leader to our organization.
After a horrific arm injury that ended his 2005-06 season, Stayzer came back last season and played a career-high 60 games for the Rayz. The soon-to-be 27 year olds style of play made him a fan favorite for every team he has played for and fans in New Mexico should expect nothing different.
Ortiz, 23, becomes the fourth Scorps rookie invited to training camp. The forward spent the past four years playing for Northeastern University. In 128 games, the 511, 190-pounder scored 18 goals and 24 assists.
I am really looking forward to coming to camp with the Scorpions, said Ortiz. This is an exciting opportunity for me and hope that I can fill the role the coaching staff has set forth for me.
While playing for the Huskies last season Ortiz was named the NU Hockey Veterans Unsung Hero Award, awarded to the Northeastern hockey player who dedicated himself to long hours on and off the ice to add to the programs storied tradition. The Charlestown, Mass. native was also awarded the Rookie of the Year Award in 2004 after his freshman season.
From everything we have heard about Ray, he is a hard working player with great upside, said Murphy. He comes from a great collegiate program and we are looking to him to be one of those great energy guys.
