EAGLES UPSET BEES 3-2 IN OVERTIME By: Rachel Reida
Hidalgo, Texas—It was Aaron Schneekloth who nabbed the game-winner one minute into overtime to lead the Colorado Eagles 3-2 over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees in front of a sold-out crowd Saturday night at the Dodge Arena. Colorado diminished a 2-0 Rio lead in the second period notching three consecutive goals to come away with the overtime win on a night that saw the Bees retire the #7 jersey of Sean Gillam. Mike Tuomi put the Killer Bees up early in the first period with a 5-on-3 Rio advantage power play goal directly in front of the Eagles net at 5:16 with helpers coming from Lance Herauf and Travis Banga to give the Bees the 1-0 lead going into the second. Rio posted yet another power play goal at 11:16 when Ladislav Kouba, with the help of Josh Bonar and Jon Hedberg, was able to connect to put the Bees up by two, but with just 1:26 left in the period Colorado’s Ed McGrane converted on the power play to narrow that gap 2-1. Eagles right-winger Fraser Filipic tied things up 2-2 just 26 seconds into the final period, sending the game into overtime, and it was Schneekloth’s game-winner just one minute into the overtime period that would seal the win for Colorado 3-2. Marco Emond came away with the win in net ending the night with 21 saves, while David Lemanowicz suffered the loss with a season high 53 saves. Next up the Bees travel to Corpus Christi to face the Rayz Sunday afternoon at the American Bank Center. Game time is set for 3:05 p.m. NOTES • Lemanowicz along with the Bees defense were able to hold of an early 5-on-3 Colorado advantage at 10:19 in the first period, and held the Eagles 1-for-9 on the power play tonight. • Netminder David Lemanowicz has had an outstanding weekend thus far coming away with 93 saves in just two games while allowing only five goals. • Rio has picked up three points so far this weekend and look to add two more to come within one of the Corpus Chrisit Rayz, with whom they are battling with for the last playoff spot.
