Laredo’s Jeff Bes Named CHL’s Most Valuable Player

The Central Hockey League (CHL) announced today that Jeff Bes of the Laredo Bucks has been named the recipient of the 2007-08 Central Hockey League’s Most Valuable Player award.  The honor is ‘presented annually to the Central Hockey League player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team’ and is determined through balloting of CHL coaches, communications staff members and selected media members in each market.

Bes ranked at or near the top of most offensive statistical categories in the CHL, ranking second with 46 goals, third with 106 points, fourth with 60 assists, first with a +40 plus/minus rating, tied for third with 16 power play goal and tied for third with eight game winning goals.

“I’m very happy for Jeff, this is a great honor for him, he deserves it very much,” said Bucks head coach/GM Terry Ruskowski. “He’s a two way player. Not only can he score and dish it out, he plays good defense as well.  As long as he keeps performing like he has been he will always have a job here in Laredo.  I have never had to tell Jeff to start working harder, because he always works his tail off.”

The Tillsonburg, Ontario native led the Bucks to the best record in the Southern Conference at 42-19-3 and the second highest point total in the CHL (87).  Two times this season, Bes was named the Oakley CHL Player of the Week (October 29th and January 7th).

Bes won the award narrowly over Alex Leavitt of the Arizona Sundogs, the CHL leader with 126 points.  In all, 48 ballots were cast with Bes receiving 18 votes and Leavitt 14 votes.  Also appearing on the MVP ballot as finalists were Bossier-Shreveport’s John DeCaro (named CHL’s Most Outstanding Goaltender last week), New Mexico’s Konrad Reeder and Rocky Mountain’s Brent Cullaton.

The 2006-2007 Ray Miron President’s Cup playoffs begin tonight with games scheduled for the DeSoto Civic Center (Mississippi vs. Texas) and at the Ector County Coliseum (Odessa vs. Austin).
