Sundogs Sniper Keeps on Scoring
NOTE: Urquhart extended his goal streak to 18 games with a goal in Tuesday's 3-1 loss at Laredo in Game Two.
Arizona forward Cory Urquhart has been on a goal scoring tear since early March and looks as if he has no thought of slowing down. The Halifax, Nova Scotia native has scored 10 goals in seven post-season games leading all CHL players and last night he helped push the Sundogs to a 1-0 lead in their best of seven Southern Conference Finals series with Laredo.
During the regular season, Urquhart scored 20 goals in 16 games and finished the regular season with a 10-game goal scoring streak (tied for the longest of the season – Rocky Mountain’s Daymen Rycroft). The 6-3, 205-pound forward did not stop there as he has since scored in seven straight playoff games, just one game shy of tying the CHL record for consecutive games with a goal in CHL playoff history.
Dating back to the regular season, his 17-game goal scoring streak is the longest in CHL history combining the regular and post-season and is more than any other goal streak posted in the NHL and the AHL. Over his 17-game streak, Urquhart has scored 26 goals.
The NHL record is 16 games held by Punch Broadbent who scored 27 goals over his streak while playing for Ottawa (1921-22) and the AHL record is 14 games held by Brett Hull who scored 19 goals over his streak while playing with Moncton (1986-87).
The former second round selection of the Montreal Canadiens in the 2003 NHL Draft was a key member of the Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL) last season who won the AHL’s Calder Cup. His playoff experience could be the difference in pushing the Sundogs into the CHL Ray Miron President’s Cup finals in just their second season as a franchise.
