Brahmas Enter 2008-09 On Everyone’s Radar
The quietist success story in the CHL last season was the Texas Brahmas and rookie head coach Dan Wildfong. The Brahmas got off to a modest start and sat at 14-15-1 in early January. It was at that point the team took off like a rocket going 26-7-1 over the last two months of the season.
Texas went into the playoffs rolling and won their opening round series over Mississippi and the conference semifinals over the Governors’ Cup Champion Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in a series sweep. The Brahmas then took the Colorado Eagles to seven games before bowing out in the Northern Conference Finals.
The Brahmas are the only CHL team to change conferences this season heading to the Southeast Division joining Laredo, Rio Grande Valley and Corpus Christi.
Youth was what fueled the success of the Brahmas, not just from their 32-year-old head coach (youngest in the league), but also from players like Tyler Skworchinski, Kevin McLeod, Justin Kinnunen, Mark Carragher and Greg McConnell (all return for their second seasons with the Brahmas).
Strong goaltending also distinguished the Brahmas from other CHL teams and the tandem used last season, David Cacciola and Brett Jaeger, return for 2008-09. Cacciola finished last season 26-15-1 with a 2.94 goals against average.
The Brahmas instantly improved their team win they signed forward Lance Galbraith. The two-way talent is coming off his nest offensive season (67 points with Idaho, ECHL) and is usually good for 250+ penalty minutes. More importantly is his ability to turn it on in the post-season winning a Memorial Cup with Ottawa and a Kelly Cup with Idaho.
Aaron Davis (Mississippi) and Zech Klann (Austin) also have been added to the Brahmas line-up giving them depth on the front lines.
