Rage Sweeps Wichita in Three-Game Series
- Morelli leads Rage with two points in Sunday’s 3-1 win -
Broomfield, Colo. – The Rocky Mountain Rage concluded ‘Wichita Week’ at the Broomfield Event Center with a 3-1 victory in Sunday’s matinee. Rocky Mountain defeated the Wichita Thunder in all three meetings this week. David Morelli led the team with six points (5g, 1a) in the series including a goal and one assist in Sunday’s finale.
The Rage improved to a 20-15-4 (44 points) overall record and 2nd place in the Northwest Division. The Thunder fell to 12-24-2 (26 points) for 4rd place in the Northwest Division.
The Rage took the lead with the lone goal of the first period. Mike Bulawka skated down the right wing to the back of the net and passed it out in front of the crease to Morelli scoring his 15th goal and 28th point of the season.
In the second period, defenseman Mark Smith added a goal for the Rage on a breakaway assisted by Colt King at 13:40. It marked Smith’s first goal of the season.
Wichita’s Troy Ofukany ended Rage goaltender Scott Reid’s shutout streak in the game with a powerplay goal at 13:38 of the third period from between the circles.
With under one minute remaining, Wichita pulled goaltender Krister Toews for the extra skater, but Morelli picked off a Wichita defender at center ice and passed the puck to Scott Wray who made the empty net goal at 19:32.
