Former Central Hockey League player and assistant Coach Chris Dashney was named Head Coach of the Lubbock Cotton Kings earlier this month, and plans on significant improvement for a club which finished with the second fewest points (48) in the CHL last season. After playing six seasons in the CHL, Dashney spent the last two years as an assistant coach to Doug Sauter in Oklahoma City. Below is Lubbock's release covering his hiring.
(Team Press Release)
Lubbock Cotton Kings General Manager Fred Meseke announced today the signing of Chris Dashney as head coach and director of hockey operations. This is a huge signing for us, said Meseke. We needed to find a coach before May so that recruiting would be a top priority. I have no doubt that his experience with one of the best Central Hockey League franchises will make us a very competitive team. Chris was a very disciplined player when he was in the league and I know he will bring his integrity and discipline to the team.
Dashney retired from hockey after the 2001-02 season and pursued coaching with Oklahoma City Blazers legendary coach Doug Sauter. Sauter has coached Oklahoma City for nine years, has been in the playoffs for eight seasons, and has amassed almost 400 wins with the Blazers. Sauters win totals rank him among four coaches in all of hockey with 1,000 or more wins. In the Blazers first 10 years of play, they were the most winning team in all of North American pro hockey during that span.
I have played under, and served as an assistant with (Doug) Sauter a coach with over 1,000 career wins, said Dashney. He has taught me a lot and I am going to work to bring that same winning tradition here.
Dashney played against Lubbock in his last season as a player and the first season the Cotton Kings were in the Central Hockey League.
I am really appreciative to be here, said Dashney. I have heard great things about the Lubbock area, the fans and booster club members, and I look forward to becoming part of the community and building relationships.
Oklahoma City has won five Adams Cups for the best record in the regular season and two Ray Miron Presidents Cups for playoff champions since the team started in 1992-93.
Dashney won a championship with Oklahoma City in 2000-01 and finished his six-year career with the Blazers. He skated with Tulsa, Wichita and Memphis before ending his career in Oklahoma City. Dashney was an all-star twice while with the Wichita Thunder. He also amassed 145 points (22g-123a) in 397 career games as a defenseman.
Dashney graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1996 with a bachelors degree in sociology. He is married to Debbie and they have a three-year old daughter, Taylor.
