The Wichita Thunder and New Mexico Scorpions sit atop the Central Hockey
Leagues Northwest Division, and each club has been recognized this week with
the announcement of the Oakley CHL Player and Goaltender of the Week awards for week three of the season. New Mexico center Konrad McKay scored nine points during the week to earn Oakley Player of the Week recognition, while Wichita netminder Jason Flick has been selected as the Oakley Goaltender of the Week after two outstanding performances.
McKay helped the Scorpions post a record of 3-1-0 last week, and recorded
multiple points in all three games. His top outing came in a 5-2 win at Topeka on November 2nd, scoring twice and adding two assists. In back-to-back victories over the Colorado Eagles over the weekend, he added his third and fourth goals of the season along with three assists, vaulting him into a tie for seventh place in the CHL scoring race with 11 points. Also strongly considered for the award this week were Lubbock right winger Nolan Graham, with three goals and two assists in two victories, and Wichita left winger Jason Duda, who had four goals and three assists in three wins for the undefeated Thunder.
With Wichita trailing Oklahoma City 3-0 on November 5th, and the Thunder in danger of losing their first game of the season, netminder Jason Flick entered the contest and prevented any further scoring, allowing his teammates to post a 4-3 come-from-behind win. The following night he stopped 31 of 32 shots in a 4-1 win at Tulsa, helping the Thunder improve their perfect mark to 7-0-0 on the season. Flick and teammate Jamie Vandespyker have combined to lead Wichita to the top goals against average in the CHL, allowing an average of just 1.71 goals per contest. Lubbocks Shawn Conschafter (2-0-0, 43 saves) and New Mexicos Miguel Beaudry (back-to-back 40+ save wins at Colorado) were also considered for the award.
