Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees Unveiled

The Central Hockey League’s newest expansion club has a name and logo. At a packed press conference today in McAllen, Texas, the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees name and logo were announced by team, city, and CHL representatives.

Designed by Glenn Perkins of GSL Graphics in Lubbock, Texas, the logo features a devious killer bee wielding a hockey stick, using a combination of dark teal and yellow as the primary colors. The Killer Bees will play home games at the Rio Grande Valley Event Center, currently under construction in the border city of Hidalgo, Texas with an estimated capacity of 5,500 for hockey games.

Hidalgo has been referred to as the “Killer Bee Capital of the World”, after the first confirmed discovery of an Africanized Killer Bee colony in the United States was documented in October of 1990. A twenty-foot long statue of a killer bee stands outside Hidalgo City Hall to commemorate the event.

“With the history of Killer Bees in the Rio Grande Valley, and the outstanding logo design possibilities, we felt it only natural to select Killer Bees as the name to est represent our organization,” said Killer Bees managing partner Trey Medlock. “We received over 1,200 entries in our name-the-team contest, and our fans clearly supported this decision.” Valley View North Elementary School was named the winner of the name-the-team contest, and seven members of their Student Council were on hand for today’s announcement. The name-the-team contest was sponsored by the McAllen Monitor and myRGV.com, who awarded the school $500.00 and season tickets.

Central Hockey League President Brad Treliving congratulated the club on today’s announcement. “We are very pleased to welcome the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees to the Central Hockey League, and commend team ownership, staff and fans for developing an outstanding name and logo.”

The Killer Bees join the Colorado Eagles as 2003/2004 Central Hockey League expansion teams. The Eagles recently crossed the 2,000 season ticket mark, and will play home games in the brand new Budweiser Events Center next season.

The Central Hockey League is currently in its’ 11th season of play since the rebirth of the CHL in 1992. Last year, the CHL enjoyed a 16% attendance increase during the regular season, and led all North American minor professional circuits with a per game average attendance of 4,356 in post-season play.
