Soar Winners, Eagles Capture Cup

With a dramatic 1-0 win in Game 5 Wednesday in Laredo, the Colorado Eagles have captured the Central Hockey League’s 2004-2005 Ray Miron President’s Cup championship. Left winger Karlis Zirnis had the only goal in the contest, and goaltender Paulo Colaiacovo pitched a 36-save shutout in the clinching victory, giving the Eagles a 4 games to 1 series win over the defending champion Laredo Bucks. Eagles center Chris Hartsburg was selected as the Most Valuable Player honors, providing outstanding defense and work ethic, as well as three goals and nine assists, throughout the post-season. Eagles forwards Riley Nelson and Ryan Tobler shared the CHL playoff scoring lead with 17 points, while linemate Greg Pankewicz led with 10 post-season goals. Hartsburg’s championship game worn jersey, as well as the Sher-Wood stick used by Zirnis to score the championship winning goal, will be displayed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Ontario.

The Eagles complete an outstanding second season of play which saw the club capture both the regular season (Bud Poile Governor’s Cup) and playoff titles while selling out all 37 regular season and playoff contests at the Budweiser Events Center, pushing their consecutive sell-out streak to 71 total games. Colorado also posted the CHL's best home (22-4-4) and road records (21-6-3) in the regular season. Individually, right winger Greg Pankewicz was selected as the Most Valuable Player for both the regular season and 2005 CHL All-Star Game, while goaltender Tyler Weiman earned both the Most Outstanding Goaltender and Rookie of the Year awards.

The five-game Finals series between Colorado and Laredo welcomed a total of 32,581 fans, averaging 6,516 per contest, bolstered by three straight sell-outs. Both Games 1 and 2 in Colorado had capacity crowds of 5,289 on hand, while Game 3 at the Laredo Entertainment Center had 8,002 in attendance. The 2004-2005 CHL post-season finishes with a total average of 4,593, the fifth straight year the CHL has averaged over 4,000 in the post-season.

Next up for the Central Hockey League will be the annual Spring Conference, scheduled for June 2nd, 3rd and 4th at the Hyatt Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona. Special guest speakers, departmental breakout sessions and Governor’s Meetings will take place. Playing rules and operational regulations, as well as alignment for the 2005-2006 season, will be among the key discussion topics. The three days of meetings will culminate with the CHL Awards Banquet on Saturday, May 4th, honoring the top franchises and individuals in numerous categories.
