The championships keep coming for Riley Cote. The former Memphis RiverKing Ray Miron Presidents Cup Champion (2002-2003) has found a home in the City of Brotherly Love and helped his Philadelphia Phantoms teammates hoist the American Hockey Leagues Calder Cup this season. The team recently signed Riley to a contract for the upcoming year to ensure him a chance to defend the title. Cote, 23, signed with Philadelphia just prior to the club's 04-05 season opener on Oct. 16 and proceeded to compile 11 points (4g, 7a) and a team-high 280 penalty minutes in 61 games. Following the championship season he was named the Phantoms' Most Coachable Player and received the Unsung Hero Award from the team's Phan Club.
This season, Cotes bruising, tough style of play earned him the respect of his teammates and the entire Phantoms organization. "Over the course of the year, Riley continued to impress everyone in the organization with his work ethic," said assistant general manager Paul Holmgren. "He improved as a hockey player and was a real asset to the team.
Originally from Winnipeg, Man., Riley helped the RiverKings capture the Ray Miron Presidents Cup championship as a rookie in 2002-03, the second of back-to-back titles for the team. He played 51 games during the regular season for Memphis, scoring 14 points (8g, 6a) and racking up 241 penalty minutes. One of his eight goals was a game winner, leading Memphis to a 7-3 home win over visiting Laredo on March 6th, 2003.
In the postseason, Cote scored a power play goal in the RiverKings 7-2 victory in Game 4 of the Finals, giving them a 3-1 lead and a stranglehold on the series. He finished second in the playoffs with 54 penalty minutes, trailing only Austins Shawn Legault (now with Corpus Christi) with 56. The RiverKings captured the Ray Miron President's Cup Championship on April 25th, when Kahlil Thomas scored 5:06 into double overtime to defeat Austin 4 games to 1.
During the regular season, he ranked 11th in CHL penalty minutes, finishing with 241, including 29 majors. In 2003-04, he advanced to play with the AHLs Syracuse Crunch prior to signing with Philadelphia the following season.
