BEES EARN 4-3 SHOOTOUT VICTORY OVER ARIZONA
HIDALGO, Texas- It looked like the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (4-4-0) were going to be stopped by some stellar goaltending but a third period rally sent the game to extra time against the Arizona Sundogs. David Marshall, Dan Gender, and Zac Pearson scored in the shootout to cap the come-from-behind win and score a 4-3 win over the Arizona Sundogs (2-4-3) Friday night at State Farm Arena.
BOX SCORE
The Bees opened the scoring five minutes into the first period when Tim Billingsley threw a short pass that caught David Marshall sprinting into the Arizona zone for a breakaway. He finished his chance and sent a backhand shot past Szuper. It was Marshall’s fourth goal of the season and his second in as many games.
A few minutes later Sundogs forward Craig Macdonald tied it up with a wrist shot from the left circle that got past Bees netminder John Murray. Arizona scored again ten minutes into the second courtesy of a Kyle Hood shot that just trickled past Murray.
The Bees had a chance to tie the game with a power-play opportunity to start the third period but a shorthanded rush led by Macdonald and finished by Luke Erickson added to the Arizona lead. The assist capped a three point night for Macdonald who also scored earlier in the game.
It looked all but over for the Bees halfway into the third period down 3-1 when Hausworth shrugged off a check and fired a laser from the point that shot past Szuper cutting the deficit to one.
Only moments later Rioux connected on a quick strike of his own to tie the game at three. For Rioux it was his first goal of the season and first a professional hockey player. Dan Gendur and Brandon Campos picked up the assists.
Murray shut the door in the overtime and shootout and ended the night with 34 saves.
