The Allen Americans (6-2-2) are just one win away from a perfect road trip after Tuesday’s 5-2 victory at the State Farm Arena over the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (5-5-0).
Box Score
Allen has won five straight games overall and are 4-0 on their current road swing that ends Wednesday night in Rio Grande Valley with a re-match against the bees.
Despite being outshot 43-35, the Americans rode the hot hand of goaltender Marco Cousineau who stopped 41 of 43 shots in the game improving to 2-0 with Allen since being assigned by the Anaheim Ducks. Cousineau was especially sharp in the third period stopping all 18 shots he faced.
The Americans jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind a first period goal from Mike Kompon and a second period strike from Steve Kaunisto (activated from the injured reserve prior to the game) but they could not hold it as the Bees gained momentum with back-to-back second period goals from Jason Beeman and Jason Dixon tying the score at two goals apiece.
The game changer came with just one second remaining in the middle frame when rookie defenseman Dylan King pushed a shot across the goal line regaining the lead and throwing a punch to the gut of the Killer Bees.
For King, it was his second goal of the season and first game winner.
Nick Layton and Jason Deitsch added goals in the third period making the margin much greater than the game played.
Wylie Rogers took the loss for the Bees stopping 30 of 34 shots he faced.
Deitsch finished with a goal and an assist extending his league-best point streak to 10 games, while Colton Yellow Horn saw his point streak come to an end at eight games.
The win moves the Americans into sole possession of second place in the Berry Conference, one point ahead of the idle Tulsa Oilers.
