Gorillas Sign Two Important Center Pieces

(Courtesy of the Amarillo Gorillas) Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Gorillas of the Central Hockey League (CHL) announced that the club has re-signed centers Derek Hahn (left) and David Rattray (right). The addition of the two forwards brings the Gorillas roster to fourteen.

Rattray, 5’11’’, 200, from Edmonton, Alberta, returns to Amarillo for his 7th season. He played with the Amarillo Rattlers three seasons before playing for the Gorillas the last three seasons. Head Coach Joe Ferras said of the signing of Rattray, “Dave has top level conditioning and it has shown in his durability, only missing two games in the last five seasons. He will be counted on to be a force on the ice and log a lot of ice time in crucial situations.”

Rattray, a favorite amongst Amarillo hockey fans, has tallied 67 goals, 106 assists, 173 points and 1266 penalty minutes in 368 games played in Amarillo. His 368 games played are the most ever in Amarillo professional hockey history. “I wasn’t happy at all with the way things ended last season (a defeat by the Laredo Bucks in the Southern Conference Finals). Rattray added, “I’ve had an itch to play all off-season and am very much looking forward to this year.”

Hahn, 6’0’’, 185, from Elmira, Ontario was the CHL Rookie of the Year in 2002-03 and leads the Gorillas all-time in goals (84), assists (116), and points (200) in 168 games played. Over his three-year stint in Amarillo, he averages 1.19 points per game. Last season he led the way for the Gorillas with 29 goals, 49 assists and 78 points in 60 games. Head Coach Joe Ferras is looking forward to having his top scorer back for the 2005-06 season. “Derek has been a main cog in the success of the Gorillas over the last three seasons.” Ferras said, “From the moment he arrived, he displayed outstanding work ethic and gifted offensive ability.”

Hahn also participated in the 2005 World Games in Duisburg, Germany, helping lead Canada to an inline hockey silver medal. In seven games played, he had two goals and three assists. Hahn is also a two-time CHL All-Star selection, earning first team honors last season. “Amarillo is a great place to play and I’m really excited about coming back.” Hahn said, “As a team, we’re almost there. Joe (Ferras) has done an outstanding job and we just need to continue to work hard.”

The Gorillas open the season at the Amarillo Civic Center on Saturday, October 22nd at 7 p.m. against the Laredo Bucks.
