Central Hockey League pre-season action continued Saturday, with nine different clubs in action, including the expansion Youngstown SteelHounds, who won their first ever contest with a 6-4 road win over the ECHLs Toledo Storm. Elsewhere Saturday, Colorado doubled up Amarillo 6-3, Rio Grande Valley blanked Laredo 5-0, Oklahoma City cruised 7-1 over Tulsa and Odessa handled Lubbock 6-4.
Youngstown 6 @ Toledo 4 (ECHL)
Trailing 3-2 in the Second period, the SteelHounds scored four consecutive times to post their first win in their first ever contest, downing the storm 6-4 at the Toledo Sports Arena. Youngstown tallied four power play goals in the contest, with Paul Vincent (two goals), Jeff Christian (goal, two assists) and Chris Richards (goal, two assists) leading the attack. David St. Germain and Simon St. Pierre combined to make 30 saves in the SteelHounds net.
Amarillo 3 @ Colorado 6
Eagles tough guy Fraser Filipic failed to register a penalty minute but did manage to find the back of the net three times to lead Colorado to a 6-3 win. Defenseman Matt Desrosiers added four points (goal, three assists) for the Eagles while Jason Chafe (goal, 2 assists) paced the Gorillas.
Rio Grande Valley 5 @ Laredo 0
Goaltender Terry Dunbar made 28 saves for the Killer Bees to give his club a win in their first exhibition contest. Aaron Lewis, Bill Newson, Matt Medley, Clay Plume and Phil Cherneski all scored single markers, while the Bucks rested stars Jeff Bes, Brent Cullaton and Chris Grenville.
Oklahoma City 7 @ Tulsa 1
After an early goal by Tulsas Drew Otten, the Blazers rattled off seven unanswered goals to claim a 7-1 win in Tulsa. Goaltender Sebastien Centomo led Oklahoma City with a 34 save performance, with Jared Dumba chipping in with a goal and an assist.
Lubbock 4 @ Odessa 6
The two clubs combined for seven power play goals in the contest, with the Jackalopes scoring three times in the third period to earn a 6-4 win. Adam Loncon had a pair of goals and Dominic Leveille added a goal and two assists for Odessa, while four different Cotton Kings scored for Lubbock.
Five games remain on the CHL exhibition schedule, with Fort Worth heading to Oklahoma City, Rio Grande Valley visiting Corpus Christi and Memphis playing in Austin (all Sunday), while Rio Grande Valley hosts Corpus Christi on Monday to conclude the pre-season.
