The Youngstown SteelHounds, an expansion Central Hockey League franchise for the 2005-2006 season, will finally have an opportunity to impress their fans in person, playing their home opener this Friday at the 5,700 seat Youngstown Convocation Center in the first hockey game to take place at the state-of-the-art facility. The new facility officially opened this past weekend with concerts by 3 Doors Down and Tony Bennett, receiving rave reviews by near-capacity crowds. While the arena has been preparing to open, the SteelHounds have been traveling extensively, playing five road contests to begin their inaugural season in the Central Hockey League.
Going a respectable 2-2-1 to start the season (posting wins in Tulsa and Fort Worth while earning a point in an overtime loss in Bossier-Shreveport) the SteelHounds will welcome the Oklahoma City Blazers, two-time CHL champions and career franchise wins leader (516) as Youngstowns first home opponent on Friday evening. Leading Youngstown in the early going is 3-time CHL All-Star center Chris Richards, tied atop the scoring race with 10 points, and NHL-experienced left winger Jeff Christian, with three goals and five assists to date.
It is a very exciting time to be opening the Convocation Center, and for the hockey fans of the Mahoning Valley and the city of Youngstown to have their first opportunity to see the SteelHounds play, said SteelHounds Head Coach J.F. Laforest. We have already played five games but this is different being the first time professional hockey has been played in Youngstown. I love the effort our team has given through the first five games and know the fans will become addicted to SteelHounds hockey.
The opening two-game series against Oklahoma City on both Friday and Saturday evening begins a stretch of six home contests in a row for Youngstown, also welcoming the Tulsa Oilers (November 11th and 12th) and Laredo Bucks (November 15th and 16th) for back to back contests before embarking on a three game trip to Lubbock (November 18th), Oklahoma City (November 20th) and Bossier-Shreveport (November 22nd).
