Late Goal Sinks Sundogs in 2-1 Loss at Wichita
WICHITA, KS – A late power play awarded to the Wichita Thunder was the difference as Chris Chappell’s goal secured a 2-1, St. Patrick’s Day win over the Arizona Sundogs at Intrust Bank Arena in front of 5,637.
Arizona’s Kyle Hood was tagged with a four-minute, high-sticking penalty with 3:43 left in regulation. Chappell buried a rebound in front of the net with 2:05 to play to put the Thunder ahead.
The game-winner came after MVP candidate Matt Robinson tied the game 7:38 into the third from Matt Summers’ centering pass in the right-wing corner. It was Robinson’s 32nd goal of the season.
After a scoreless first period, Adam Smyth put the Sundogs on the board with a wrist shot from the slot at 6:07 for 10th of the season and the only goal of period two to give Arizona a 1-0 lead.
Both goaltenders dueled back-and-forth throughout the night as Arizona’s Mike Spillane held Wichita Thunder scoreless for more than 47 minutes of action including two breakaway stops on Robinson and RG Flath, plus a glove save in the first on Robinson from the slot. Spillane finished with 38 saves despite the loss.
Adam Russo picked up the win for the Thunder stopping 26 of 27.
Chappell’s power play goal was the only one for the Thunder in five chances. Arizona finished 0-for-2 on the man-advantage.
