Forwards Chris Grenville of the Laredo Bucks and Sebastien Thinel of the Odessa Jackalopes combined for six goals and eight points in leading the Southern Conference to a 10-6 victory in the 2003 Dodge Central Hockey League All-Star Game. The Northern Conference scored first on a nifty goal by Don Parsons of the Memphis RiverKings, but the South scored the next seven goals en route to a 7-1 lead after two periods of play.
The North made things interesting in the final period, closing the gap to 8-4 at one point, but Grenville added his third and fourth goals in the closing minutes to earn Most Valuable Player honors. Also standing out for the Southern Conference was Odessa's Sebastien Thinel with two goals and two assists, as well as Eric Schneider of Laredo (1 goal, 2 assists), Chris Richards of New Mexico (1 goal and two assists) and Kelly Smart from Austin (3 assists). The pro Northern Conference crowd of 9,834 got something to cheer about late in the third period, as hometown hero Joe Burton, the CHL's all-time leading scorer, scored twice in the last six minutes to earn 3rd star honors. The RiverKings' Parsons finished with two goals, while teammate Derek Landmesser and Fort Worth's Chad Woollard added single tallies. The game was preceeded by the CHL All-Star Skills Competition, featuring five separate skills competitions. Tulsa's Todd Marcellus earned Fastest Skater honors, while Grenville took home Hardest Shot accolades with a 93 mile per hour blast. In the Rapid Fire competition, the Brahmas Woollard nailed four targets in five attempts to win the contest, while Indianapolis goaltender Shawn Silver stopped a combined 14 of 16 shots in the Rapid Fire and Breakaway Relay competitions to earn Top Goaltender. Overall, the South earned an 8-7 Skills win with Chris Peach of the San Angelo Saints scoring in sudden death to seal the victory. |
