(Courtesy of the Wichita Thunder) Sonic Thunder Dog rode a United Rentals Crane to the roof of the Wichita Ice Center Monday morning at 8:15 AM, where he will remain 24 hours a day until this Saturdays Thunder game versus Oklahoma City becomes a sellout. The Thunder office will also remain open 24 hours a day and a different radio station will join Thunder Dog on the roof from Monday thru Friday. Each station will do a live remote to promote ticket sales and a portion of each days sales will be donated to a different charity. As of early Tuesday afternoon, the Thunder has sold 7,420 tickets for the game.
The Thunder intend to fill the Kansas Coliseum with 9,700 fans, breaking the Thunder single-game record of 9,698, set back on Saturday, January 14th, 1995 vs. Oklahoma City, a 6-5 Thunder victory. The Thunder have sold out 11 games in their 14-year history.
All fans in attendance on March 18th will receive a pair of Thunder Stix, courtesy of KAKE TV-10 and Cox Communications. The game will mark the Blazers first trip back to Wichita, since Thunder All-Star Travis Clayton was injured by Oklahoma City defenseman Tyler Fleck. Clayton missed six games, while Fleck was suspended by the CHL for 10 games. The Thunder will be wearing special green jerseys, sponsored by the Ameristar Casino in Kansas City. A live jersey auction will be held on the ice following the game, with all proceeds donated to the MDA.
Prior to the game, fans can "Bash a Blazer for a Buck", as a car, painted in Blazers colors, will be placed outside the front of the Kansas Coliseum, courtesy of Stoner's Body Shop in Valley Center. For a $1, fans can take their best whack at the car with a sledgehammer. Numerous other promotions will take place on Saturday. The Thunder will also be on the air Tuesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m., co-hosting the KPTS Channel 8 pledge drive. Thunder players will be answering the phones and anyone who calls in a pledge of at least $40 will receive two tickets to this Saturday's game.
The Thunder, currently tied with Oklahoma City for second place in the Northwest Division, will return to action on Friday at Bossier-Shreveport. Face-off is set for 7:05 p.m. Wichita's magic number to clinch a playoff spot for the third straight season is just five points.
