Going into Saturday night's game at Evansville, the Fort Wayne Komets had a chance with a win to be one point behind the IceMen in the Central Hockey League's Turner Conference. Instead they are now seven points back.
Is there any hope left for finishing first?
Because the Komets are 7-4 against Evansville, they may not think it's as important to finish first and claim the playoffs' home-ice advantage. The players left from last year should remember losing a do-or-die Game 5 in Rapid City when all they talked about afterward was how important the home-ice advantage turned out to be..
There are 13 games left after Saturday's 3-0 loss at Evansville (and Sunday's 2-1 IceMen overtime win over Dayton), and the Komets need that to be a lucky number for a hot streak. If they need any immediate motivation, the Komets should take a long-term look at the playoffs.
