This year marks a momentous occasion for hockey fans across the United States as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Central Hockey League (CHL). For half a century, the CHL has been a cornerstone of minor professional ice hockey, developing talent and bringing exciting action to communities throughout the country.
Founded in 1963, the CHL emerged as a successor to the Eastern Professional Hockey League, carrying forward the torch of competitive minor league hockey. Our league’s roots run deep, with four of our initial franchises relocating from the EPHL, joined by a fifth from the International Hockey League.
From day one, the CHL has been closely tied to the National Hockey League, serving as a vital pipeline for developing players and coaches. This connection has ensured a high level of play and given fans the opportunity to watch future NHL stars as they hone their skills.
We owe much of our success to the vision of our founding president, Jack Adams. A hockey legend in his own right, Adams guided the league through its formative years until his passing in 1968. His legacy lives on through our championship trophy, the Adams Cup, which continues to be the most coveted prize in CHL hockey.
Over the past five decades, we’ve seen incredible games, unforgettable players, and passionate fans who have made the CHL what it is today. From our humble beginnings with five teams to our current roster of clubs, we’ve grown alongside the sport of hockey in America.
As we reflect on 50 years of history, we’re also looking forward to the future. The CHL remains committed to providing top-quality hockey entertainment and serving as a launching pad for the next generation of hockey talent.
